Many women and girls enter the judicial system with a poor self-image and a history of trauma and abuse. Through journaling, creative writing and a variety of visual arts projects, I help them develop a stronger sense of self, an identification that goes beyond being institutionalized which is vital to their recovery. The process of creativity can begin the process of recovery, expansion, growth, transformation and connection, bringing wholeness, meaning, depth, and new ideas of self. Art, through its form and purpose, is a vehicle for conversation and reflection - the opposite of patterns of thought or action that often lead to violence, depression, and personal crisis.
